The Secret to Making Great Home Brewed Coffee

The obvious first step is to buy quality coffee beans instead of preground coffee. Unfortunately, it's not so easy as just using a common $20 blade grinder. A blade grinder doesn't even 'grind', it just hacks the coffee beans to death, making a lot of different sized grounds and irregular shapes. It may not be that bad if you just want small grinds, but trying to get consistent medium or coarse grinds is a hassle.

Having a regular, even shape, for all of your coffee beans is extremely important for consistency of flavour during the brewing process. 70% of the coffee bean is loaded with great flavour; it's the other 30% that tastes bad. If the grind is consistent, it is easier to figure out what the optimum brewing time is. If it is irregular, than some grind will not be soaked enough in water, while others will have too much of that bad flavour pulled out of them. We end up with a weak coffee or one that tastes like an ashtray. This is why a burr grinder is very important. It will grind the beans evenly.

I like to use a french press to make my coffee. It's a really quick and easy way to prepare coffee.

  • Set your burr grinder to a coarse grind setting and grind your beans
  • Add the grinds into the french press
  • Boil some water
  • After boiling water let it sit for 10-15 seconds to cool down
  • Pour the water in the the press and stir
  • Put the lid on the french press - do not push the mesh filter down yet!
  • Set a timer for 4 minutes
  • When the time is up push the mesh filter down on the press
  • Pour into a mug and enjoy!

You want to make sure you let the boiled water cool down for at least 10 seconds before pouring it onto your grinds. Another thing is using filtered water makes a huge difference in taste of your coffee. Try boiling just plain tap water and drinking some after it has cooled enough, it will most likely taste really bad. Try doing that with filtered water and you really notice the difference.

I found this Capresso coffeemaker with a built-in burr grinder on Amazon. It has really great reviews. It costs $184, but looks to be a great buy for making coffee if you can afford it.

To keep your coffee beans fresh, store them in a seal-able mason jar and store it in your cupboard. Never freeze or refrigerate them.

Cuisinart Grind and Brew?
Ok.. I have this coffee maker and I actually hate it. Steam escapes up into the coffee grinder and makes the beans wet. Its ridiculous. YOu have to clean out the grinding compartment after every pot because of this. Now I have a moldy smell in the coffee maker because I assume steam has accumulated in an area I cant reach to clean. Any one else have this problem. Is there anyway to clean this out so I can use the maker again until I can afford a much better maker?

Curb a spouse's Starbucks habit?
We have a Cuisinart grind and brew machine at home. It is really nice and sits on the counter. I looked at the bank account online and saw that my husband has gone to Starbucks 4 out of 5 days this week on his way to work. Granted it is like $4.85 per trip and he'll probably go on the weekend too. Over the course of a year, that comes to over $1200. Coupled with going out to lunch on average of 3 days a week at around $7 and a $20 a week tobacco habit. It's about $3,300. In a 365 day period it is close to $10 a day that he is spending. Granted he's the bread winner and makes most of our money, it still makes me angry because there is so much else we could be doing with $3,300. I'm not a wife that shops all of the time and I maybe get to go out to lunch with my friends twice a month. I know he has to eat, and the chewing habit isn't something that is going away anytime soon. (I've flushed brand new cans of Copenhagen down the toilet). What can we do to trim this down? We're not struggling financially. I don't have to work but I'm a photographer on the weekends because I enjoy it. The money I make is chunks of $200 here, $600 there. During the week I stay home with our 6 month old son. I want to max out the IRA every year. We have similar goals in putting away substantial money in money market accounts and keeping around $15,000 in savings. Save for the baby's 529 etc. Smart people have money because they don't blow it on Starbucks nearly everyday. eharrah1 - I'm sorry I have to disagree with you. He makes the money and I'm in charge of managing it. Between the two of us we make about $6,000 a month. I bring home enough to cover a $615 car payment, the power bill, the cable/internet. We don't own our own home, so that's a big goal as well.
