The Secret to Making Great Home Brewed Coffee
The obvious first step is to buy quality coffee beans instead of preground coffee. Unfortunately, it's not so easy as just using a common $20 blade grinderHaving a regular, even shape, for all of your coffee beans is extremely important for consistency of flavour during the brewing process. 70% of the coffee bean is loaded with great flavour; it's the other 30% that tastes bad. If the grind is consistent, it is easier to figure out what the optimum brewing time is. If it is irregular, than some grind will not be soaked enough in water, while others will have too much of that bad flavour pulled out of them. We end up with a weak coffee or one that tastes like an ashtray. This is why a burr grinder
I like to use a french press to make my coffee. It's a really quick and easy way to prepare coffee.
- Set your burr grinder
to a coarse grind setting and grind your beans
- Add the grinds into the french press
- Boil some water
- After boiling water let it sit for 10-15 seconds to cool down
- Pour the water in the the press and stir
- Put the lid on the french press - do not push the mesh filter down yet!
- Set a timer for 4 minutes
- When the time is up push the mesh filter down on the press
- Pour into a mug and enjoy!
You want to make sure you let the boiled water cool down for at least 10 seconds before pouring it onto your grinds. Another thing is using filtered water makes a huge difference in taste of your coffee. Try boiling just plain tap water and drinking some after it has cooled enough, it will most likely taste really bad. Try doing that with filtered water and you really notice the difference.

To keep your coffee beans fresh, store them in a seal-able mason jar and store it in your cupboard. Never freeze or refrigerate them.
